Open Letter to the Community
For many people, myself included, it's not easy to ask for help. Asking for help has often been associated with showing weakness. At the YWCA, we encourage those in need to ask us for help and reinforce to them that by doing so is ultimately a sign of strength. We also teach that there is a responsibility when help is given to be a good steward of that help, to grow and become better for it. Being good stewards of this community's help and support is what has allowed the YWCA to serve Fort Dodge for over 100 years. It is our goal to continue that service and good stewardship for the next 100 years.
The overarching philosophical focus of the YWCA is work to provide long term residential services to the individuals that arrive at our door and to help them make long term positive and sustainable changes by providing shelter, on site nursing staff, substance abuse counseling, parenting skills groups, life skills groups, and initial vocational counseling. These services with counseling make all the difference when it comes to individuals’ success.
As the number of women, women with children in need, and the extent of their needs continues to increase, so do the costs of providing the long-term housing and programming services we provide.
It is through generous donations from the community, both corporate and personal, that has maintained the YWCA in Fort Dodge as a positive presence and enabled us to provide a hand up to thousands of deserving individuals.
